Hi it’s Ayumi! Do you eat rice? How do you cook?
Rice cooker, Donabe or Microwave? There are several ways to cook rice.
As you know, Japanese eat rice everyday. Today, I will introduce how I cook rice at home!
First of all, let’s learn about rice nutrients. Rice contains various nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, calcium, iron, vitamins, and dietary fiber.
Carbohydrate is a nutrient necessary for moving and warming the body, and it is easy to digest, so it can be used immediately as energy.
Protein is a nutrient that forms the blood, muscles, and cells of the body, and we want to take a lot of it especially during the growth period. A bowl of rice contains about the same amount of protein as 120 ml of milk (half a cup).
How to storage rice
These are the important points to keep rice good. Let’s check one by one!
- Buy in small quantities. As the days go by, the flavor will get worse, so buy the amount you can eat in a month. I buy 5kg bag of rice each time.
- Store in a closed container or bag. The package of the rice you purchase at store has little air holes. So don’t keep rice in the package as it is.
- Store it in a cool place(ideally below 18°). Avoid sunshine.
- Do not place with strong odors such as peppers, coffee or oil nearby.
How to cook rice!
Electric rice cooker
An electric rice cooker is used by the majority of people.
Rice cookers with simple functions such as cooking, reservation, and heat retention can be purchased from the 10,000 yen range. With more functions such as the ability to cook different types of rice and the ability to make rice porridge or sweets, the average price will be in the 40,000 yen range.
In addition, some brand manufacturers that are particular about the material of the kettle cost more than 100,000 yen! They are positioned as high-end electrical appliances.
It is widely used because it cooks automatically and easy, and it can be said that every Japanese household has one.
Donabe (Clay pot)
Cooking rice with donabe sounds difficult, but it’s not! Recently, clay pots that are easy to clean and very easy to use are increasing in response to demand. Compared to electric rice cookers, it has outstanding heat retention, and you can cook more delicious rice.
Recently, the number of people who cook rice in clay pots is increasing. I used to use an electric rice cooker for a long time, but I changed it to a clay pot about a year ago too. Since the first day, I have been using the clay pot and have never used an electric rice cooker again.
A famous brand clay pot costs more than 10,000 yen, but my favorite one is in the 4,000 yen range, which is very reasonable. It is highly recommended because it has a good cost performance and you can cook delicious rice.

The last is the rice that can be cooked in the microwave. The package contains already cooked rice. When you want to eat, just heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes and you will be able to eat warm rice.
One set of 5 packages can be purchased from the 700 yen range.
It can also be heated with boiling water, so it is a good idea to stock it as a disaster ingredient together with a simple gas stove.
